Hi, I'm Bryan Yeaton, and this is The Weather Notebook. We have a new Brainstorm for you today. Apparently, some Coast Guard folks from the Boston station -- whom you might imagine, have quite an interest in weather -- were pondering the temperature of ice.

PB: Hey, I just got a question for you - (that's) kind of got us stumped here at the office. You got a thermometer in a block of ice and it's 50 below zero outside. What does the thermometer read? This is Pierce Boulanger with the US Coast Guard. Just curious if anybody can tell me the answer. Thanks.

Now, that's a poser. Do you have the answer, or at least a pretty good guess? If so, we would love to hear it. Give us a call at our toll-free number: 888-RAIN-001. That's 888-RAIN-001, or 888-724-6001. You can also write to us at questions@weathernotebook.org. If your answer is right on the nose, or so interesting that we couldn't possibly ignore your wit and charm, we might use it on the air. And if we do, your voice will be heard all over the United States, as well as around the world on Armed Forces Radio.

Our question again -- if you were able to place a thermometer in the middle of a chunk of ice, when the temperature is, say, minus 50 degrees or so, what would it read inside the ice? And why -- that's the tough part. So, give it a shot! Our contact information again: e-mail us at questions@weathernotebook.org, or give us a call at 888-RAIN-001. You can also review this question, and all of our past programs at our website: www.weathernotebook.org. Good luck.
