The National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation is an independent agency of the United States Government, established in 1950.
The Foundation consists of the National Science board and a director, each appointed by the president with the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate. The NSF's mission is:
"To promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense."
The NSF recognizes that some of their support for scientific activities should be for formal education programs, but it is also appropriate and useful to encourage informal education in the sciences, through self-initiated, self-paced activities, such as at museums, science centers, and through the media such as television and radio - hence, the NSF's support of weather education through The Weather Notebook.
The NSF's support of The Weather Notebook is provided through the NSF's Division of Elementary, Secondary, and Informal Education. The Informal Science Education Program promotes public interest, understanding, and engagement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through voluntary, self-directed, and lifelong learning opportunities. The NSF support was awarded through a competitive grant program.
